This is a unique opportunity to visit one of the most popular San Francisco attractions, historic and notorious Alcatraz prison, and see concrete sustainability in action with a specialized tour of the concrete preservation work that CIM students and faculty are performing in partnership with the National Park Service. The tour will take place on Monday, May 6, 2013 from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, including transportation and lunch.
Thanks to the CSU Chico CIM program and the National Park Service, we are able to provide this specialized tour, including bus transportation to and from the Hotel Sofitel San Francisco, a box lunch, boat transportation to and from Alcatraz Island, the regular Alcatraz tour program, and the customized concrete preservation tour, for the same cost of $40 that is charged regular visitors for only the Alcatraz tour.
Despite being a former federal prison, Alcatraz is located on a beautiful island in San Francisco bay with gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and great views of the San Francisco skyline. It was the home of infamous prisoners such as Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelley, and Robert “The Birdman” Stroud, and has a rich history that also includes an 18 month occupation by American Indian Tribes. You will hear about all the “Rock’s” history, and see how it is being preserved with the help of the concrete industry. After all, preservation is the first line of sustainability, so this tour is a perfect complement to our conference program.
Space is limited to the first 50 registrants, so please register immediately to secure your spot.
