Hilal El-Hassan, Ph.D

Dr. Hilal El-Hassan is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the American University in Dubai, UAE. His teachings span the areas of structural analysis, concrete design, and foundation design. Prior to joining AUD, he was a research associate at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Dr. El-Hassan finished his PhD degree in civil engineering majoring in the structural and materials departments. His research interests comprise of investigating the effect of early-age carbonation on concrete products including concrete masonry units, concrete pipes, and concrete pavement. Dr. El-Hassan's work on concrete masonry units examined the ability to permanently sequester carbon dioxide gas in the form of the thermodynamically stable calcium carbonate, while thriving to maximize the uptake in order to reduce global carbon dioxide emission. His ongoing research encompasses sustainable permeable concrete pavement in Dubai and corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures.

Dr. El-Hassan received his Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees with honors alongside an excellence award for engineering students from University of Balamand, Lebanon. He also received a prestigious MEDA (McGill Engineering Doctoral Award) for his exceptional performance before and during his doctoral degree. He has several publications in civil engineering journals including ACI and ASCE material journals discussing the different aspects of concrete carbonation and its effect on concrete microstructure.

Rami Hawileh, Ph.D.

Dr. Rami Hawileh is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the American University of Sharjah, UAE. He has been with AUS since August 2007 as an Assistant Professor. He is also a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Virginia, USA. Before that, he was a structural analyst at AREVA NP INC., An AREVA and Siemens Company, Lynchburg, Virginia, USA (2006-2007). He was lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (2005-2006) and Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (2003-2006). He was a structural engineer at the Austin Company, Schaumber, IL, USA (2000- 2001). Dr. Hawileh has a PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee (2005), an MS from Bradley University (2000), and a BSc from Birzeit University (1998), all in civil engineering with emphasis on structures. His research interests include strengthening and computational modeling of reinforced concrete structures subjected to fire and cyclic loading. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers in international journals. He has also published over 35 Articles in International Conference proceedings and given numerous presentations on finite element modeling of structural concrete members strengthened with FRP laminates when subjected to static, cyclic, and fire loading. He received the "College of Engineering Research Excellence Award 2013-14" in April 15th 2014. He ) has been also awarded a scholarship by the ‘Distinguished Scholar Award of the Arab Fund Fellowships Program.’ The scholarship will cover his Sabbatical leave period (Spring Semester 2015) at Michigan State University (MSU).
